Owls may have amazing eyes, but it's their ears that do the real work when hunting. And it's their apparent imperfections that make them so effective.
Many species of owl have ears that are not only placed asymmetrically on their heads but are also different sizes. This allows the owl to receive sounds at slightly different times, providing the birds with an exceptional ability to pinpoint the location of a sound; when a sound is equally loud in both ears, the owl knows it has zeroed in on the source and distance.
Meanwhile, their flattened faces funnel sound to the ears, magnifying it so that they can detect even the slightest sound from tiny prey.👂
The move releases air bubbles from their feathers, cutting down on drag and doubling or tripling their speed underwater, according to Smithsonian. To make the leap back ashore, some smaller penguins can launch themselves 6 or 9 feet into the air by speedily swimming to the surface and bursting up over the ice shelf. 🐧
Isn’t that interesting? Blue is the world’s favourite colour – it’s above us in the sky and we are surrounded by blue seas and ocean and yet when it comes to blue in nature, it’s the rarest colour.
How blue is made is a mind blowing mix of chemistry, physics and evolution as they aren’t pigments – they are made with microscopic structures which continues to fascinate scientists just like with the blue of butterflies.
We often call things blue but they are really purple like blueberries. The blue whale is closer to grey. Even blue eyes aren’t blue – oh and they are the rarest eye colour too🫐🧞♂️!
While the cartoon mice have never officially tied the knot, their voice actors have. Minnie’s current voice actress, Russi Taylor, married Wayne Allwine, who voiced Mickey for 32 years. They remained married until Allwine’s death in May 2009.💒
🐻❄️In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the National Foundation for the Preservation of Fur-Bearing Animals (now known as The Humane Society) to help preserve bear populations worldwide. In 1978, Congress p***ed legislation designating December 26th as Recordable Teddy Bear Day in honor of this influential animal advocate!🧸
🧠Crows are super smart. In fact, they have been known to use traffic to help crack nuts. Crows have been observed dropping nuts in busy intersections, then waiting for cars to drive over them and crack them open. That's not all though, these crows were seen actually waiting for the light to turn red to drop their nut. They fly away when the light turns green, then fly back to get their freshly-cracked nut at the next red light.🤓
🏰At the heart of the castle stood the keep, a strong and fortified tower.
This was the safest place in the castle during an attack.
The keep housed the important residents of the castle, along with important rooms such as the great hall, bedrooms, and kitchens.🏰
The story of Cinderella wouldn’t be the same without that pumpkin that turned into a coach to take her to Prince Charming’s ball, so it’s fitting that the fairy tale was the first time the word “pumpkin” was used in the we know it today.
Pumpkins were first named by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1584. He called them “gros melons,” which translated to “pompions” in English.
Pompions eventually evolved into pumpkins and the first known use of the word in literature was in the story of Cinderella.
Countries like England and the Philippines may have some interesting flavor riffs, but for sheer variety, none of them come close to Japan. There, Kit Kats come in regional flavors like yubari melon, corn, and green beans and cherry. There are also national staples like miso, green tea, and the most popular flavor of all: soy sauce. Part of the appeal stems from Kit Kat’s completely unintentional similarity to the phrase Kitto Katsu, which translates as “surely win” in Japanese. Over time, Kit Kats have become a popular good luck charm and gift. One tradition involves sending special Kit Kat postcards to college students just before big exams.
A lightsaber blade’s color is determined by the crystal it uses to focus the energy, Jedi and Sith alike could and did wield any color blade. The Sith got in the habit of using red after popular Darths Revan and Malax both used red lightsabers; Jedi fell into the habit of exclusively using blue and green when they started using the natural crystals of the planet Ilum to make their blades, where green and blue were the only naturally occurring colors.
No one really gives Ewoks enough credit. An Ewok, a being that just discovered that life exists on other planets accompanies them. He distracts several of the Imperial forces guarding the facility by stealing a speeder bike and leading them on a chase through the forest. That's mind boggling. This little guy woke up in the morning, probably brushed his lustrous coat of fur with a stick or whatever, and then rode a flying death machine through a labyrinth of trees for a cause he barely understood. Ewoks had yet to develop any motorized transport and yet they can pilot vehicles that weren't even designed for their species. It's like a Paleolithic man taking a Snapchat of his cave painting.
Laid down for a short nap yesterday, and ended up sleeping thgrough both voting and the Pokemon Go community day! Sigh. I do feel more rested now though.
