Step 1: Role play week-end!
I'm super happy! My friend Sarah organizes role play games with the association "Dollz Dream" and she asked me if I wanted to participate in this adventure. I said yes right away! I'll explain a little: her association gathers participants to play in great outside scenarios, much like theater, except that you are literally plunged into the story: you wear costumes, play a role, events occur and you talk with other characters to understand the story... For this special weekend, the organizers decided to make us play in a story they wrote about the last days of French monarchy, in July 1789, just before the Revolution... Oh dear! It's such an exciting period! I already imagine the decors, costumes and atmosphere! For this occasion, I will play the role of one of Marie-Antoinette's royal guard. I will follow the queen in her travels and protect her. I will ride on horse, and maybe duel with swords?

Step 2: Arrival at Versailles
With my companions, we are the regiment of Marie-Antoinette's royal guards! He he! I have a splendid uniform, a horse and a sword. And it's time for us to enter into her service. The sun is there and the weather is mild... All the better, I don't really want to smell like horse all weekend long. Let's say that the standards of body hygiene weren't that high during the 18th century! We arrive at the castle via the Doorman's House, where lives the one in charge of Versailles's gate. I see in the distance the Queen's Hamlet, the great lake and the famous tower overhanging it, the small Trianon and above all, the facade of the palace of Versailles! Oh boy, the organizers really had their share of fun with all these decors. Let's see, where can I park my horse, oops, I mean... Who can I leave my horse to, my brave man?

Step 3: Tense atmosphere
Wow, they made a real replica of the Marble Courtyard, the one right in front of the Palace of Versailles! It's impressing, I feel rather small in the middle of all this. This association knows how to go big! I see other participants dressed as courtiers get off their carriages and walk up the stairs, beautiful ladies delicately hitching up their huge skirts to avoid stepping on them, stable lads taking care of the horses, coach drivers regulating the flow of carriages and all this high society coming every day to the palace, in order to feast and celebrate? When do they work? Ha, I forgot, nobility doesn't work! (Oops, one of my companions gently nudges me... I broke out of my role, making fun is allowed but it's nicer to play along). As soldiers, we may be nobility, for all that, we aren't idle. Among all these people wearing lace, my companions and I notice that the guards of the palace are rather tense. After asking them a few questions, we learn that the common people are furious, especially in Paris. There is a threat of starvation and the kingdom's coffers are empty (again). But the government doesn't seem to care, especially here in Versailles. It's not the first nor the last time French people protest!

Step 4: Loose morals
This afternoon, our brigade escorts the queen and her ladies for a stroll through the beautiful gardens of the small Trianon. We are safe here in the queen's private domain (Amazingly recreated by the association! So much talent! And Sarah is the one playing the queen of course! I'll have to keep a straight face if I want to talk to her), there is almost no risk of being attacked, but still, we are on the lookout. We follow from a distance the group of ladies who laugh a lot, share secrets and gossips. But how the heck do they sit with these infernal crinolines without having their dresses turned over? A group of gentlemen invite the queen and her followers to a game of blind man's buff... One of the boys is blindfolded and has to guess the name of the one he manages to catch! I bet that the one having the most fun is the blindfolded person and I see out of the corner of my eye two lovebirds discretely leaving the place to hide in the green labyrinth close to the Temple of Love. The court is entertained. When I think about the peasants who slave to feed, accommodate, dress and entertain all these people I tell myself that their anger may be rightful. Fortunately we are far way from Paris.

Step 5: Nobility games
Evening was slowly falling on Versailles and once again it's open bar at the palace! I'm on duty with my brigade in the sumptuous Hall of Mirrors, not far away from a ballroom where people smoke, laugh and play. We keep our eyes open and our ears sharp because tonight nobility is slumming it: the queen's friends brought board games and most importantly... gambling games. Sums way above several years of my personal pay are exchanged on one single dice throw! Even if I'm not the most thrifty person myself, this is enough to make me grind my teeth. The loss of money and alcohol could make a gentleman lose his temper and to avoid a vainly dangerous duel we have to separate the two aristocrats. If someone dies at a party, the family of the deceased could blame the queen! Conversations roll along and even if Paris is mentioned, nobody speaks about the recent events except to make fun of it. Suddenly a messenger appears out of breath. To avoid disturbing the queen and her entourage, we intercept the message. My God! The population of Paris took up arms and... the Bastille fell! The situation is worse than what it seems. But... these boorish peasants would never travel all the way to Versailles to lash out at the king and the queen, would they?

Step 6: Should we flee?
The news of the storming of the Bastille on the 14th of July spread like wildfire among the courtiers. Most of them openly laugh about it, thinking that the common people would never dare to attack the palace, the siege of royalty and that they are safe in Versailles. But I'm sure of nothing. If the Parisians dared to attack the Bastille and overthrew this symbol of royal power then yes, the queen is in danger! I managed to cross the mass of courtiers and to obtain an interview with her in her private apartments. I beg her to take the peasants of Paris seriously and to take refuge until the situation has been defused. But the queen prefers to keep her dignity. She thanks me for my concern and my devotion, but she refuses to be cowardly and to give in to fear and if it has to come to it, she will face her destiny. Meanwhile, the show must go on.

Step 7: The end of a reign
Night fell and the first fireworks illuminate the summer sky at the pace of the orchestra's music. There's a bal at the Grand Trianon and the whole court wears its fairest clothes, its unique jewelry and sophisticated wigs, each of them costing a year's worth of salary. They were all made especially for the occasion and would end up in a dusty cupboard. All this luxury sickens me, I only see it as a vast parody. The queen dances and smiles in the lights of the court, as if nothing was happening. She is the one setting the tone, the one everyone observes and she must not fail. For a second our eyes meet. I feel all her fear, hidden behind the mask. Tomorrow, the revolutionaries will be at our doorstep. I can already hear their voices screaming for justice. My queen, why didn't you flee?

And so it ends! Sarah and the organizers gathered us to congratulate us for our participation and tell us the little anecdotes of the weekend. Oh my! What an adventure! Immersed in the atmosphere, I totally forgot all the rest. Getting back to reality is a shock, I'm exhausted but happy. My mind is still in Versailles, I have no idea how I will be able to focus on my work tomorrow haha, but before getting back to a normal life I enjoy the meal with all the members of the association, talk and laugh with them (and congratulate Sarah for her royal performance). I can't wait for the pictures to be online and to remember all these good moments. I think I got my fill of memories, until the next adventure!
