Today is the Algeria National Day !

It celebrate the Indipendence of this country and it's Bank Holiday!

Because of its tradition as a welcoming land and the multiple civilizations that have crossed it, Algeria inherited a rich history which is expressed by the ruins of various periods. Thus Africa, the Mediterranean, Europe and the Orient mark specific influences in the historical path of Algeria.

Here a bit of history about this celebration :

The independence of Algeria was proclaimed on July 5th, 1962 after the end of the national liberation war. It was announced during a televised speech by General De Gaulle. After 132 years, the French colonization ended with the ceasefire declaration and the signing of the Evian Agreements on March 18th, 1962.

More than half a century after independence, the celebration of the national holiday is still under debate. Instead of 5th July 1962, the official proclamation of independence, Abdelhamid Mehri, a leading figure of the FLN, proposes as date September 19th, 1958, corresponding to the birth of the GPRA. In the national history, July 5th has never been received unanimously. Independence was gained in effect on March 19th, and confirmed through a popular referendum on July 3rd, 1962. As for the date of July 5th, it reminds a bad memory of colonization, because it corresponds to the capture of Algiers by the French troops on June 14th, 1830. In short, the history of a country is always complex, but a national holiday commemorates an historical, political and cultural events related to the history of the country. And indeed, the collective memory influence a lot the vision of the past.
