Step 1: Fire of the white page

I am quite a successful writer. I mean, I was, before I fell short of inspiration... It's been months since I haven't wrote something worth of it. A few weeks ago, I started ignoring my editor's desires and I begun writing about the man of my dreams. I hope that will help me get motivated...
I'm stuck in front of my white piece of paper, once more when, the phone rings. It's my editor, in a bad mood again. He tells me he is waiting for my work. He wants something sensational, a science fiction story. He wants adventures and dragons! But that's not what inspires me these days. He starts getting cross and sort of shouting at me. That's when I hear a strange noise in the kitchen...

Step 2: A totally unknown guy in the kitchen!

A bare-chested guy is eating a yoghurt in front of my kitchen window! A guy I don't know! Yet I do have the feeling I already met this guy... Quite good looking... Did I see him in some fashion magazine? Or on TV?
No! He's the guy from my book! But...! I pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming. He really looks like the guy I described: big, brown hair, beautiful eyes! I'm sure he's called Zach! Like the boy in my story!
Even though I know everything about him, I'm somewhat panicked. Words come out of my mouth: Who are you? Where do you come from? I can't find something original or smart to say. I would have never let something like that happen in my story!
My name is Zach. I'm from far away. That's doesn't really help me... I'm trying to think of what I wrote about my character. But I can't remember. And he won't answer my questions. But he is so cute that my only wish is to leave with him to go and live new adventures, far away.

Step 3: Far away

"Far away", these words make me want to travel though time. I imagine that Zach is from the past and try writing about it while I hope the story I'm writing will become true, as true as the guy eating a yogurt in my kitchen just now.
The effect is immediate. A few seconds later, my chair collapses. A flash. And I wake up hearing galloping noises and loud cries. I get up and open my yes all wide: in front on me, are Indians on mustangs, urging towards a little village.
It's OMD city. Zach who is near me, seems to be totally comfortable with the situation. With his lasso, his hat and his colt, he looks like a real Far west cowboy. It's hard to believe that these little houses have become the huge buildings in the town I live in.
It's funny you wrote about yourself being an Indian. True that I'm a perfect Pocahontas at the moment. How is it that Zach is a cowboy? Well, I suppose I won't meet John Smith, then. I think there is something that isn't quite clear in this story!

Step 4: Far West

As soon as I arrive in the Far West, tones of strange ideas come to my mind. I don't know why, I started worrying about the sticks that hold my family tepee and about the men who went hunting buffalos. Quite naturally, I went to my camp and left Zach, all alone, on top of his hill, with his colt and his cowboy hat. Indians didn't welcome me ceremoniously, I was already part of their clan. There was no need for anyone to show me how to prepare dried fish nor meet. I took part in the life of the camp, as if I was born there.
I don't know how much time all this lasted. But the battery of my notebook didn't go off. Does that mean my note book is great or just that I only stayed here for a short time. Helping with the camp tasks in the daytime and writing my story at night.
One morning, as the sun was rising and I was finishing one of the chapters of my book, Zach appeared in the far away horizon, on an azelan horse. I went to meet him discreetly with my notebook that seemed anachronistic here with Zach and the Indian camp behind me.
Zach seems less at ease than the first day: "I don't come from here, in fact", he says. Where are you from then? One thing's for sure: I can still change this story. Indeed, I'm not sure the Far West is the best place for my novel.
I think hard for a while. I know! Why not meet totally different Indians...

Step 5: In the jungle

A white flash dazzles me. A loud cry comes out of my mouth when I can see what's going on again: a tiger is coming to me! I don't have time to catch my breath, a loud sound comes from the forest and makes him run away. That wasn't exactly what I had planed...
All around me, the beautiful vegetation must probably be full of dangerous creatures. Zach is comfortably sitting on an elephant and seems totally relaxed with his gun on the shoulder. Are we in the right place, at last?
He tells me to come up with him on the pachyderm. I'm not quite sure about that, but it might be more secure up there than down here with snakes and all these creeping insects! Mind you, you can find snakes in trees... Brrrr, it makes me shiver...
The elephant moves along, guided by Zach. I can't stop looking all around. I want to remember everything to be able to write it all down in my story.
At some point, the jungle becomes less dense and I notice an alley between the trees.

Step 6: In the Maharajah country

The landscape is beautiful. The palace is sumptuous, like if it was from another world. It shines like it was made of gold, plenty of arabesques catch the sunbeams all around.
As soon as the elephant stops in front of the entrance, I jump to the ground and Zach follows me.
Everything is the same as in my dreams. People bow in front of me as if I was a princess. A sweet perfume floats in the air, accompanied by a gentle melody. People bring me food, but I'm not that hungry. I think the journey through space and time made me feel a bit crummy... A young lady wearing a sari tells me to follow her, she calls me "Maharani" .
I'm so tired that I fall down on the cushion while Zach joins me in the bedroom.

Step 7A (left): But Zach never existed.

"Zach never existed". I feel pain inside myself while I write down these words. Zach does not exist and never existed at all. This palace around me is an illusion.
But before I make it disappear for ever, I want to give our love a last chance to travel.
My heart beats so hard. I cling to the cushions yet I feel like I'm falling down, down, down. I haven't moved at all in reality. My hands are still on the keyboard.
When I open my eyes, I find myself in front of a wonderful landscape. It's the fairy world of my childhood. It's all sweet, I hear kids laughing, a siren singing, water running down a cascade. Only Peter Pan is missing.
Zach sits down next to me and we have a long chat. Then he decides to explore the place. Therefore I decide to write the end of the story. When he comes back, I am writing the last words "But Zach never existed", as I take a look at his gorgeous smile. A flash and I find myself in my office, the same one I left a few hours ago. Zach has disappeared . He went back to the world of books... To know that I will never see him anywhere else than in my dreams makes me feel so sad...
A few days later, I have sent my work to my editor. I feel a bit gloomy when I think about Zach but my editor is clearly satisfied. My novel gets published a few months later. It is a great success.
Now, I often think about Zach, lost between the pages of the novel that I called "His name is Zach".

And I never stopped. Thanks to my fairy notebook, I travel with Zach to fairy-like lands. We travel through space and time, to the point that the galaxy has become a place we know by heart.
We know all the periods the human races lived through: we have visited the Egyptian tombs, the great migrations of the ice area, the construction of the Great China Wall, plenty different invasions, the discovery of new continents. We were there on the day everything started. And on all the days after...
Sometimes, I sit on the moon or on a comet and I watch the earth. It reminds me of a long time gone period of time. Then I look at Zach who smiles and is always ready to take me on a trip, "far away"
We have a loyal companion who follows us everywhere: a unicorn. When I travel among the stars, I've got time to think about my life, and the choice I made and that turn my life into a novel.
