Gardening

I don't have a very big yard so I can't have an actual "garden," but I've recently taken up gardening. Playing Harvest Moon for a few hours inspired me.

Anyway, I planted three milkweed seeds last Thursday, and one of them has sprouted. I'm really excited about that because it's the first time I've grown something from a seed.

I have some carrot seeds I wanna attempt to grow after I come back from a two week trip and I can't wait to see how the milkweed will turn out. Does anyone else grow plants?

Re: Gardening

I actually used to. :] We have sorta have 2 gardens? One in the back and one in le front. Front one is bigger but because of the mango and banana trees it doesn't get much sunlight so we mostly to the planting in pots in the back. (Someone thought it would be nice to cover it all with cement)
Around an year ago I planted a Rose, Chili and a Capsicum tree. It actually went pretty well. The Capsicum tree gave us quite a lot of capsicum before something happened to it. My aunt says it got sick and died.. O.o I'm not sure if that actually happened or if she just wanted more pots to grow Chili murdered it along with the Rose tree (R.I.P I loved you.)
Yea... After my aunt took over it kinda went all.. Chili.. Needless to say, we a LOT of Chili at home!
I also planted this 'glue' tree. I'm not sure what it's called but its fruit could be used as glue! We also have a passion fruit tree. It's vines are started to cover up the whole house but it still haven't even given us one fruit! Same as the mango tree we have! 2 years and nothing! Flowers have started to grow but that happened last year too and it all died.
My aunt's current project is growing sweet potato and lemon. :]
I've been actually wanting to plant some carrot and tomatoes!

Re: Gardening

When I was small my grandpa used to have a little garden. I found somewhere a little maple tree and planted it there. I was taking good care of it and it actually grew pretty big.
Apart from that I'm rather unsuccessful when it comes to gardening. I don't have any plants in my room because I either forgot about them or water them too much. Either way they all die. I also once got a lucky bamboo from my dad. He told me it's really easy to take care of. But once on a very hot and sunny day I forgot to cover my windows and when I got back from school the bamboo kinda... boiled. It wasn't a pretty sight...
So yeah, I must count on others to grow carrots and tomatoes for me XD

Re: Gardening

I love gardening! I have a flower garden, and until very recently had a vegetable garden also. Now my vegetables and herbs, or those of them that survived, have been moved into my flower gardens. (our backyard is a disaster right now since we're excavating to the house foundations to fix some basement water issues, so my veggie garden got covered in piles of dirt).

The flower garden that received most of the veggies and herbs. Today everything's already a lot bigger, and this was only taken 2 weeks ago:

The other flower gardens with their new additions:

One of my giant alliums. My sister gave me a bulb from it two years ago for my birthday, and this year two of them came up :)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/snortmort/IMG_1571_zpsb4fbd874.jpg

I can't remember the name of this one...gazania, maybe?
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/snortmort/IMG_1579_zpsc52cd700.jpg

I think this one's a zinnia?
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/snortmort/IMG_1583_zps39925335.jpg

Absolutely no clue on the name of this one, but I think they're so cute:

I love gardening - love getting my fingers in the dirt and seeing the progress of my little plants. I started a whole bunch of flowers from seed in the bigger front garden, and they're coming along so nicely - I can't wait to see all kinds of flowers in there! When we moved in, that garden was basically just a few ugly shrubs - so not my style!

Re: Gardening

Well, we have a huge garden but it's actually my grandma who gardens. I used to try back when I was younger, I think we still have the chili tree I planted only it's fully grown now (duh) I stopped because of this incident where this cactus plant I really, really loved got lost because someone accidentally pushed it off it's ledge and I'm not sure what happened to it but it was gone. I'd show you guys pictures of the place but it's dark out so.... sorry.

Those flowers looks amazing! :O I have to look into some flowers that grow in tropical weather. It's hard finding things that will tolerate sun all year round without many cold days.

Re: Gardening

Ooww snortmort's are so pretty!
Well, I have a garden too although it's mostly my mom who takes care of it. Inside the house we have some white and purple orchidaes on the kitchen window, they look so beautiful when they bloom and we also have basil for the summer meals.

On the front yard we have a huge daisy bush, a rose bush and something that looks like a Dahlia. Next to the outside walls, gates and the veranda we have some bushy trees and what we call "morena" (moraine/brunette) which gives green and yellow leaves. Along the garage path we have white jars (I think that's the name), lavender and cry babies. Oh and these silvester ones that give yellow and hot pink flowers!

On the back yard, the cement part has one of those silvester flowers and on the land part we have lemon, orange, clementine, tangerine, apple and persimmon trees and also a huge chayote. And then we try some cherry tomatoes, pumpkins, lettuce and cabbage, sometimes we're lucky enough and the chicken won't eat them ahahah!

I planted sunflower seeds some 4-5 days ago and they sprouted over the weekend. I plan on transplanting them soon and hopefully they take the transplant well.

Re: Gardening

Well, last year I had an Ibean, and I have no idea what kind of plant it is, but it grew freakishly fast, and it got huge. It would have kept grow, had ants not decided to invade the soil.
I personally love gardening. I love growing plants and taking time to look at them. Back when I lived in Oregon my neighbors invited me over to help with their gardening, and I had an awesome time. I don't have a garden now, but I would like one when I move out.

I love the huge sunflower heads when they have really vibrant petals *_*

These are the four sprouts I posted pictures of before. Over the weekend, they grew their first pair of true leaves and I'll need to transplant them soon so they don't kill each other off.

And some sunflower greens to add to my salads. It has such an earthy taste.

They're high in protein and since it's raw and fresh, it still has all it's good enzymes and it's juicy.
I'm not really crazy over organic food, but eating sunflower greens alone as a salad tastes a lot better than store bought cabbage. :O

Thanks! I hope they live through their transplant today. I didn't know their roots would get so deep at this point and they have to be moved from this crowded pot ASAP. I know they'll go into shock when they get moved but I hope they get over the shock and stay alive! D:

Wow, fairykisses, your corn is already starting to tassel! That's so early! And your flowers are so beautiful and exotic looking - very nice.

I need to post up some updated garden pictures to show how much everything's grown already....

The flowers you planted are lovely! I am not a kind of gardening person, I don't garden a lot. I only go to the flower shop to buy a pot of flower. That's all. My mom though loves to garden but she's not very good with them..

How long did it take for the corn to get to that point? :O The only food I'm growing now is carrots. I'd try something bigger if I had the space.

Also, does anyone know what it means when a plant gets a purple stem?
I read it has to do with the plant being stressed. It's plausible since I just transplanted my sunflowers. My sunflowers aren't droopy but their stems have been purple all day and it's worrying me.

The top plant's stem isn't as dark as the bottom plant. I put them in the dirt under the mulch.

It's almost been a month since I planted my corn or it could be just a tad bit longer then that, but it seems that it didn't take long at all.

Re: Gardening

That is really fast for corn, or maybe it's a special fast-growing kind.  :-)  "Knee-high by the 4th of July" is the standard measurement goal for growing corn where I am.  It usually grows as tall as a person before cobs start appearing.

Re: Gardening

Wow, girls, your flowers and plants are so pretty and look so healthy! Now I feel envious of you for having gardens. I live in a flat on 8th floor and I only have a small balcony. We used to keep there some flowers in pots during summer but we haven't done that for the past few years because of my cat that was eating the poor plants... und puking then everywhere. I love cats, but they are so stupid sometimes -.-'
