while i DO appreciate that the bad-words filter was finaly set to english, does it REALY need to detect ANY sequence of letters that forms a bad word?
i mean, we can no longer write glasses, peacock nor several other innocent words!
WHY IS THIS FILTER SO PARANOID!?
LOL I noticed that. I actually thought it was a glitch
While it is necessary to censor certain words, in today's technological world there must be better programs that can detect whether or not a 'bad' word is inside another word and therefore not intended to be inappropriate.
Like those mentioned by darkjewels. After all, some of these are items that are even SOLD by the game (such as eye/sun glasses), so they should be excluded.
If people want to curse, I've found they will just do so and not bother to hide it within innocent words.
I know with the forum that I maintain you can actually manually enter certain words to censor instead of part of it. I would think that would be possible with this layout & this format.
I personally think they should concentrate on trying to stop all of these dolls who use that actual "F" word in their name... all 4 letters, no variation of how it was spelled.... the real word. And yes, I report each and every doll who's name is inappropriate by using the "report" function and by sending a PM to a mod.

I am aware of this too, but the game engine uses a different filter than ones used in forums.
well... i am aware that a filter is necessary, but... couldn't the coder have applied a better-quality filter? i mean, one that would not prevent you from writing a non-bad word...
i'm not bothered by the filter itself, actualy, i approve having a filter here, it's just the filter's quality... as far as i know, there are filters that know the difference between glassess and a bad word.
but you said that the filter the game engine uses is different... most likely different from the filter used in YahooAnswers and Habbo too(those are able to cut even when people use symbols to write a bad word, without blocking non-bad words)... oh well... this complicates the situation...
i bet feerik will keep using the same filter it always did on other versions xP
so... yeah, whatever... just commenting about the fact they finaly set the filter's language to english so now we can write cookie, computer, bite, and everything else the french filter used to cut XD
You can't use the words: hot, shot (as in flu shot), sexy (have to say 'handsome'), just to name a couple.
darkjewels wrote:

Cookie cannot be used as it effects the site's coding.

Sexy shouldn't really be used in the first place.
All the mods have discussed the filter and we have asked before to get 'hot' removed from the list. I'll check in with the Admin to see how this is going, but don't expect to get it changed anytime soon as she's busy.

I'm not sure how the word "sexy" is a dirty word. It basically means "gorgeous" or "glamorous." I do realize that without the "y" to the word, it indicates something that shouldn't be discussed but if Feerik is THAT worried about keeping things clean, they should start by lowering the hems on some of the skirts and dresses. Some of those are so short they look "s k a n k y" (not sure if that is a filtered word or not). And they should also remove some of the ads for the game IMVU that shows some pretty graphic scenes. And some of the videos for free feez are rated R which shouldn't be viewed by the younger crowd.
It's a pretty big double standard if they block players from using the word 'sexy' considering the fact that they use the exact same word in stage 1 of the current quest storyline:

Here I am, with my dressing-ground at 9:30 in the evening, more sexy than ever, typing frenetically on my keyboard to help my best friend.
Maybe they didn't mean to choose that word, since there are a lot of other spelling/word mistakes elsewhere throughout the story, even in that same sentence - it should read " dressing gown" and "frantically" not "dressing-ground" and "frenetically".
I didn't know where else to post this... since this string is regarding censorship.. I have a Big complaint regarding one of the latest videos that is presented for the free feez. It's called "Road to an IPO" ... To me this one is so out of line with what this game for GIRLS is for. This is pornographic.. Please MODs have a look at this and have it taken down.. I'm not the only one here that was shocked as to what is being presented. There is not even a filtering "enter your age" pre page. This is so wrong

thanks! ^-^
er... actualy, when i said cookie, i did not mean browser cookies... i meant these:
these cookies above are ok, aren't they?
or did i missunderstand something now? x_X
if i did, sorry about that
Whether the cookie you mean is one that you eat or one that is programmed, because the word itself is used in the programming it can not be used...irregardless of how the user meant it.
It could cause some kind of error and/or they don't want to take the chance that it will.
Exactly my thoughts Jenzg11. They (Feerik) takes the time to install a filter for so-called dirty words but can't take the time to censor some of the videos? I don't think that the mods can do anything about taking that particular video down, other than to send an email to whoever is above them. And I might be guessing but the reply might be that the company who provided that video should be the one to be contacted.
Regarding Jenzg11's post...I have just viewed the video and I will send the GM an email about it, as I do find the beginning and end of the video to be inappropriate for this site. I can not promise it will be removed though, but I will notifiy the GM about it's content.

I also have a feeling this may the reply, but I will still let the GM know about it. The beginning and end of the video is inappropriate.

Oh good grief.. thanks for letting us know about this! I don't ever watch the videos or do the stuff for free fee'z because I just couldn't be bothered.. so yeah, its very helpful when ya'll spot things that are inappropriate.
As far as the filter goes, i'm just happy we finally got it. We've been asking for one for a while now... Yeah its not perfect, but it was badly needed.
Just as an update regarding the video in question...I received this response from the GM:
Indeed, this is totally inappropriate. The video checking hasn't been done correctly here. I reported that bug and be sure the video will be removed promptly.
I can confirm that the video is no longer showing.
Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention Jenzg11.
Please do not hesistate to contact a moderator again should you find a similarily inappropriate video.
Thank you also to Feerik for removing the video.
Oh thank goodnesss! I was dumbfounded and shocked when I spotted that video.
How in the world did that slip through??
So glad you girls took care of it.
Karen
I agree that the English language filter was a necessary, and long overdue, addition to the site... but I also agree that it is a little overzealous. I actually have one page where it censored the word "sparse"... and, while I do recognize the component being flagged, I also recognize that it is not literally a "true" swear word (at least not in the States).
I also got comment that was astericked out today... and, for the life of me, I could not fill-in-the-blank with a single "bad" word that made sense. It's very difficult to respond intelligently when the context is incomplete :S
But, above and beyond that, my biggest (and only real) complaint is this: It was my fervent hope that this new filter would STOP the use of inappropriate usernames... it has not! I saw a brand new doll created last night (full profanity, no "creative camouflage")... so the filter is a failure in that respect, as far as I can see =(

Yes, I agree...of all the places a filter should (and desperately could) be used, it's in the naming section. Just another thing to put on the Mods Wish List. ;) (Well...and Player Wish List.)
As always, the best way to get rid of profane usernames is to report it to a moderator, as they do get deleted fairly quickly that way. (Only to be replaced by more, I know...but, it's the only weapon we have against profane usernames right now.)
For those wondering how they can report a profane username without the filter censoring it, use spaces when sending a mod. a private note (eg: p r o f a n e u s e r n a m e.) (Do not report these names in a mod's comment section, please.)

while i do agree with this too, it could also spoil appropriate usernames...(example: if someone wanted to use the name "sunglasses")
and it would still not prevent those who make inappropriate usernames from doing something else. nor from creating accounts with profane usernames by using numbers and the letters o, x, and a few others to try and dodge the filter. they always invent means to do so.
@mods: got it! the word "cookie" itself must be avoided because it can bug the site. noted!
it does sound odd that writing a word in a message field can affect the site's coding, but ok. if that's what happens... o_O

Thank you so Much Willowskye! You were quick at getting this done. I watch the videos, as I'm on a very limited budget and buying feez is not always in the budget.
Thank you, and all the mods for the hard work you do for us.

It sounds odd to me as well. I've never run across that problem with maintaining message boards or forums. I've done Ezboard, Yuku & proboards which when looking at the "guts" or coding area it looks like alien or unintelligible words.
As for reporting that doll with the inappropriate name, if you copy the URL of their page... will it show up correctly or with astericks? (I'll have to test that with myself)
I don't mean to go back to what you were previously talking about, but the word 'sexy', I do agree, should not be used at all. However, not only does this word come up in the curent adventure, but it also shows up in the Dollz men store:
I don't intend to sound like I'm backstabbing you mods, but this bothers me, and I had to share this.
