Step 1: Tell me a story!
Grandma, can you tell me a story about when you were young? Alright, but only one, and then you need to go to sleep, dear. It was a long time ago, your mother hadn't even been born yet. My father, your great-grandfather, was the commander of a small island in the Caribbean. As for me, I spent most of my time trying on dresses and clumsily stitching my initials onto my future wedding gown (I wasn't very good with my hands, which will become apparent pretty soon). But most of all, I complained about my boredom to my nanny, who did what she could to keep me busy. One day, my parents came to tell me that they had found me a husband, a good match, and that I needed to prepare myself for marriage. But I was so young! I still dreamed of adventures and mysteries, and the idea of marriage depressed me.

Step 2: The kidnapping
I couldn't sleep that night. I had left my window open so the fresh evening air could blow in, and I stared at the ceiling wondering what the husband my parents had chosen for me would look like. Suddenly, a loud noise made me jump out of bed. I picked up the pan we used to keep warm in the winter and brandished it, ready to take on the beast that would dare enter the room of a frail lady. To my surprise, there was a scruffy young man clumsily climbing onto my balcony! He was cute and seemed so unsure of himself that I could have easily knocked him out without him even noticing. But instead of calling for my babysitter and guards when he threatened me with his musket, I took the opportunity to flee the life I didn't care for anymore.

Step 3: The Pearl of the Caribbean
My abductor, Jones Deep, was a pirate, and most importantly, the Captain of the Pearl of the Caribbean, a beautiful brigantine that he had stolen from a Portuguese captain. Pursued by my father's men, he had taken me hostage as a human shield! I wanted to jump into battle, but the pirates had tied me to the mast of the ship until they had sunken all of my father's guard, and until the ship was far enough from the coast. I was a bit angry, which made me blind to the danger, but I remained that way until morning when Jones tossed me a bucket of water and a mob, ordering me to scrub the deck. What?! A girl from a family like mine, cleaning the floors? It was out of the question. I was already dressed like a tramp, and now I was on my knees washing the deck. Again, it was out of the question, so I did my worst.

Step 4: To the kitchens!
As you can guess, Jones wasn't pleased when he found out that I had tangled the ropes and emptied the bucket of dirty water into his quarters. He sent me to the kitchens under the bosco's watch, Chef Louis, a big, lumpish man who kept obsessively chasing a red crab. Because there was no way I would be peeling vegetables, I decided to invent my own dish by mixing fish, meat, spices, and pretty much everything I could find in the kitchen, without cleaning or peeling anything (I didn't have time for that). I also kind of set the place on fire when I tried to add some rum to the pot, but Chef Louis extinguished the flames before they could chase me out of the kitchen. He still served my dish to the crew. I was very proud of myself and anxious for compliments, but when Jones swallowed his first spoonful, he had me chained below deck! What an ingrate!

Step 5: Below deck
Stuck below decks with the contraband, the rats, and a narcoleptic pirate and his dog as guards, I was very vexed that Jones hadn't appreciated my cooking. But after all, what could a gang of ruffians who spend their lives on the sea know about fine dining? I fought off the boredom by planning ways to escape these pirates, when I started feeling the ship move more violently. I heard cracks and creaking, and I realized that a storm had started. Everyone on deck was busy, it was the perfect moment to escape! I managed to get the dog guarding the keys to come closer, and snuck out past the snoring guard, who was sleeping despite the roar of the storm. I climbed onto the deck soaked by the rain and the waves. The whole crew was staggering back and forth, the ropes were tangled, many seemed sick and a few were leaning over the railing. Frankly, I couldn't understand how these people could call themselves sailors when they fell sick at the slightest gust of wind.

Step 6: The truth
The game had gone on long enough. With Jones nowhere in sight despite his crew spewing all over the deck, I decided to drag him out of his burrow. Swaying, I entered his poorly-lit cabin and found him lying in bed with a wet towel on his face. The king of fools himself! As I mocked him, he couldn't think of anything else but to accuse my cooking of making them ill. That was a bit extreme! I wanted to slap him, but instead I grabbed the locket hanging from his neck, curious to see the woman who had stolen his heart. To my surprise, the portrait in the locket was of a more mature woman, whom I knew very well. My nanny! I stared wide-eyed at Jones who seemed to be shrinking away, and forced him to tell me the truth. He was a pirate, but he was also my nanny's son. Having seen me so disappointed, she had asked him to pretend to kidnap me to take me on a real adventure!

Step 7A (left): Back home
I really enjoyed the adventure, but all good things must come to an end. I menaced Jones with horrible revenge if he didn't immediately order his crew to bring me back to my father's island, storm or no storm, ill or not. He obeyed so quickly that, now that I think of it, he seemed eager to get rid of me. Finally back on solid ground, I was greeted by my parents, so relieved to see me that they were ready to grant my every wish. I didn't say a word about my nanny, but I made the most of the situation and told my parents that I wanted to choose who I would share my life with myself. To my surprise, they accepted, but it was for the best, because I met your grandfather soon after. We were very happy, even though I never understood why your mother and my grandfather never wanted to go sailing with me!

Step 7B (right): Captain
It was the opportunity of a lifetime! It didn't take a lot of effort to commit mutiny and take Jones' place as captain of the Pearl of the Caribbean, despite the fact that I was a woman. In any case, I was much more competent than he was, it was obvious! As he paddled to shore back to his mother's home, I was sailing towards new adventures. I remember, we had set up our secret base in a cave where we could hide the ship and the fruits of our labors, and from there we set sail to the Isle of the Turtle, on the hunt for hidden treasures and unexplored lands all while escaping the navy! We encountered so many incredible creatures in strange places, contemplated the stars and saw lights waving in the sky, crossed terrifying storms, heard so many tiring stories, but we always held on to the idea that so many more wonderful discoveries were waiting for us! Sweetheart? Are you asleep?
