GIMP 2.6

I Downloaded Gimp 2.6 and I am trying to add a background the the doll. I understand the magic wand tool and then erasing it, but how do I put a background? Thanks.

You can find lots of tutorials in the Gimp page. As far as I've learned using Gimp, to put the background you will need to have multiple layers. But I don't know how to use layers properly ouf
