"A backdoor solution, held together by hope, spit and duct tape"

The title of this post is a direct quote from my son, when I showed him the following information I'm about to share with you. After seeing it, I think you may agree with his assessment. lol

So, I went to the French server to send a direct message to the French GM (on her doll account there.) I'm not sending an email to her about this at this time (because she has not replied to my emails since December 14th.)

I did send the message, so hopefully I'll hear back from her soon.

When I went to the French server though, I did see the team is now proposing a temporary fix to the Flash/Unity issue. It's basically a backdoor solution that will allow you to still play the game while they continue working on a more permanent fix.

It is in French, and if it was something I was going to do (I'm not), I would definitely need my son to do it for me. It's over my head. Lol

Some of you are far more tech savvy then I am though, so I'm sharing it with you. (If you want to see the original post, sign in to the French server and it's in the NEWS section.)

So, grab your hope, spit and duct tape, if you dare, and try this out for yourself (at your own risk, as I can not help troubleshoot any of this):

                                                     -------------------------------------------------------------

Hello to all players

The move from OhMyDollz to Unity is a pledge for the future of our game, it can survive the end of Flash. The only downside is that the transfer to this new version takes time, both for fixing bugs and for all of the game's modules to be adapted.

This is why our team has been looking for several months for an alternative solution to Unity, which would allow you to play without going through Unity. And we are happy to announce that we have found a solution, which should appeal to a lot of players (and which may be of use to you apart from OhMyDollz ^^)

This method will allow you to continue using Flash and thus have access to all the game modules as you know them, as well as all the modules that are not yet under Unity.

Of course, our team will continue to bring the game to Unity, but it will take time, and it will allow you to enjoy the game as you have always known it for some time to come.

How do I keep playing with Flash?

It is possible to continue playing with Flash using an older version of Flash Player and an older version of Chromium browser.

What are the steps to follow?

Download of new components

You need to start by downloading the Play Flash.zip folder

It will contain all the elements to install.

This zip file can be downloaded from this address.

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_00.png

Once downloaded to your computer, locate the file on your computer in your downloads folder. You must unzip the folder by clicking on it with the right button of your mouse and choose "Extract here"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_01.png

If you don't have software to unzip the file, you can download Winzip for free here.
(**I have provided the link to the English version, as the original link provided was to the French version. Thank you to my son for getting me the English version link.) (***Please also note that as much as I possibly can, I've tried to provide any links to the English version. If I've provided a link to a French version, please let me know as I may have just not caught that it was a French version.)

Once this is done, you will have the folder on your computer, ready to be installed. This is where you will find all the items you will need.

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_02.png

                                             1. Uninstall Flash Player from your computer.

To get started, you need to uninstall Flash Player from your computer.

Going to the folder, you will find a file named "1. run uninstall_flash_player.exe"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_03.png

Double clicking on it will start the procedure to remove Flash from your computer.

Click on "Yes"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_04.png

Then "Uninstall"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_05.png

And finally click on "Done" once the uninstallation is complete

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_06.png

Here is the blocked version of Flash Player is no longer on your computer!

Restart your computer, to complete the uninstallation correctly.

                                        2. Installation of the functional Flash Player version.

In the "Play Flash" folder, enter the folder named "2. run Adobe components"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_07.png

Then "Adobe components"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_08.png

You must start the installation by double clicking on "Run Adobe components.exe"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_09.png

Click on "Yes"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_10.png

Then click on "Next" twice

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_11.png

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_12.png

You can install all the items, but the ones we are interested in are the first two. Select the two boxes to install Adobe Flash Player 23.00.205 then click on "Install"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_13.png

Once the installation is complete, you can uncheck the option to visit the author's site (or go visit it if you wish) then click on "Finish"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_14.png

With this installation, you have an older version of Flash on your computer that is not blocked, but it will only work with a specific browser which is Chromium.

                                                     3. Using the Chromium browser to use Flash

Chromium is a browser and to use Adobe Flash Player, it is essential to go through it to play OhMyDollz on this old version.

To use Chromium, click on the "3. run Chromium" folder

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_15.png

To open the browser, click on "chromium.exe"

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_16.png

The browser will open and you can browse the Internet, log into OhMyDollz as you would Firefox, Chrome, or Edge.

Be careful, the browser will offer to update Flash at the top of the page, you must refuse for Flash to work.

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_17.png

Tip: create a shortcut to quickly access the browser.

In its record, Chromium is not the most practical. You can create a shortcut on your computer for quick access to it.

You must keep the folder for the browser to work, store it on your computer in a place where it will not be disturbing. Then click on "chromium.exe" with the right button of the mouse. From the menu, select? Create shortcut?

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_18.png

This will create a new item in the folder named? Chromium.exe - Shortcut?

https://blog.feerik.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Flash_19.png

You can place this item anywhere on your computer to quickly open the browser.

We hope this solution will help many gamers take advantage of OhMyDollz while they wait for the transition to Unity.

Sarah and the whole team.

                                                     -------------------------------------------------------------

Please, if you notice I've inserted the wrong image, or made any other mistake in translating this long post, let me know so I can fix it. Thanks.

NO, JUST NO! Please delete this information!

It's an ancient version of flash and of browsers, it will open you computer for all kinds of attacks, hacks, viruses... is it worth it just to be able to play their game?

The end of flash was announced on July 25th 2017!

They did NOTHING about it until the end of 2020. What the hell did they think? That flash won't end? Just because they don't want it to!

PLEASE do NOT do this!

haelina, thank you for sharing this!!

Please note that I am just passing on the "official" temporary fix as suggested by "Sarah [Feerik] and the whole team." In no way does the sharing of this information mean I am recommending it.

Personally, I will NOT be doing this. I know enough about my own computer skills to know this is way beyond my knowledge. Even if I got my son's help, I still wouldn't want to do it. I'd be too worried about something going wrong, or deleting something I shouldn't, etc.  Plus, I agree with you haelina...they had enough notice about the Flash issue that the switchover and bug fixes could be fixed by now. I shouldn't have to go to such lengths to be able to play OMD. Nor, do I think, should any of you.

Again, if you do decide to try this, you do so at your own risk.

I thought the same thing, based on what my brother has told me in the past: Flash opens doors to hackers, that's why computer companies stopped supporting it. Older versions allow even more possibilities for hackers to get to your personal computer and steal information; like your bank and password info. So I would not recommend trying this unless it's on an old computer that has zero - and I repeat, ZERO - valuable information on it and you don't care if it gets a virus or hacked into. A throw-away computer, in other words.

It has gotten cold, brr~ Happy Holidays to you and yours!https://us.ohmydollz.com/img/big/936.png

Re: "A backdoor solution, held together by hope, spit and duct tape"

did anybody try supernova yet? it also uses chromium and should be safer. anyway, thanks for the guide!

FOR THOSE WILLING TO TAKE THE RISK WITH THIS DOWNGRADE:

I suppose waterfox and/or pale moon would work with this method, no need to use chromium. I think (since both are derived from firefox and pale moon uses older firefox builds).

My personal reasons to not have tried this "backdoor solution, held together by hope, spit and duct tape" are:
1) I heard flash 31 (which also lacks the kill-switch) also works (this tutorial shows flash 20-something)
2) there was a Windows update (not sure if only win10 or if 7, 8 and 8.1 as well) blocking flash, so you may need to bypass THAT as well
3) I'm still afraid I won't be able to reinstall flash after uninstalling (keeping the inactive flash allows me to run certain things via run-as-date)

as for the security risks: they can be reduced with virtual machines or running Linux from a USB stick, if you REALLY need to use flash, but aren't willing to take any risks... which sounds even more complicated than the tutorial above...
hypn

also, 3 years may sound like a lot of time, specialy since we're talking about informatics here, but:
1) flash player announced its death after having been arround for what? 15 years? and they want users to find a solution to their shutdown 5 times faster than it took to develop the software, not making the source code available for those who may need it.
2) the alternatives aren't always ideal, as anyone who still has a black background in their rooms may have noticed:
>Unity seems to think everyone and their grannies have computers with 128GB RAM and therefore don't bother to prevent their software from leaking memmory, meaning anyone with a 32-bit OS will be unable to play this game (since webGL refuses to work on those, even when there is enough RAM) untill they get a 64-bit OS (and likelly, more RAM as well).
>Not to mention it takes people a while to learn how to use a new ENGINE, since the programming languages are often not the same, much like flash and webGL/Unity are not quite the same thing, the methods to achieve the same goal are just not the same. converting Unity webplayer games to webGL was a piece of cake because BOTH are developed by the very same company.
>While HTML5 is more 32-bit friendly than webGL, back when adobe announced the death of flash, HTML5 was just plain horrible to play on, and again, different engine, different methods, re-learn everything you likely spent 4+ years learning, when your deadline is in 3 years.
3) flash emulators had to do in 3 years what adobe and the previous flash player owners did in 15 years, and more than likely with fewer funds/personel and not being abble to afford working on it full-time (plus no access to flash's source code, and likely would face a legal process for attempting to use that):
>Supernova doesn't have an ETA to work on firefox/other browsers than chrome;
>Ruffle doesn't support AS3 yet (which OMD and most flash games of the past decade use);
>Bluemaxima: even the minimalist version will cost you 2GB of disk space, and I have no idea if it'll work on flash-reliant sites or just on individual swf objects, let alone if it communicates with the server, should you need it to (earning the OhMyGames currency or OhMyJackpot prizes)

I forgot what else I was going to say...
Edit: oops, sorry for the wall of text xP

Re: "A backdoor solution, held together by hope, spit and duct tape"

Thank you for this post, I posted a much simpler solution but removed it because I knew some people will not be familiar with what I've always done long before the end of flash. Any browser (old version) can be used not just chromium. I've hardly had any problems because I still use my windows XP & portable software for my windows 10 & I've always used old & new versions of software. Windows 10 switches off the flash but I put it back on.

This is not the only game that has left updating from flash until the last minute & I don't blame them because they may spend money changing the game into another format only for it to become obsolete few years later. SD 1st started their game with an earlier form of flash & they had to change the game to SWF & now they are expected to change it into something that would become obsolete few years later. HTML5 is not as popular as it was 3 years ago, unity webGL may be obsolete within 5 years. These software companies sell a product to you as the best & the next day it's less secure & obsolete. Adobe have stopped flash but it can still be downloaded from their website if you have the link, I still use windows XP 7 years after they said it won't be secure,

The best thing to do is keep the flash & create a flash browser or flash player software for the game instead of relying on companies who will tell you a software is not secure & obsolete because they want to sell another product.

Re: "A backdoor solution, held together by hope, spit and duct tape"

Perhaps my question is not that intelligent, but I am not a tech person (nor morning person but that is another story lol ), but if I get a computer with an old version browser, will the flash app work there? or will I have still problems with Flash?

I think I'll just put up with the bugs until they have something better.  I have to agree with Haelina on this

the answer is not that obvious. if it was, I would have downgraded flash back when I 1st heard of jan 12th, instead of hoping the black BG on webGL gets fixed soon (is anyone else still having it?)

even with a browser that still supports it, flash will only work if you use an older version (of flash) or if you manage to make the software think it isn't jan 12th yet by changing the system's clock (which can break manny things, including flash itself, until the date is corrected) or by using a software named "run as date" by nirsoft, though you'll have to use the 32 bit version for 32 bit software (likely flash's case), as the 64 bit version of run as date will not work on 32 bit software for some reason. if you pick the wrong version of flash player, you may experience stuttering, lag and a few other problems.

if you choose to use run-as-date, be sure to pick a 32bit browser, as I didn't have much luck with run as date 64bit (and let us know if you had better luck)

windows 10 also had an update that blocks flash content from running, so if you're using that OS, you may have to take additional steps to get flash to work besides just using older flash versions.

regardless of which version you pick, be mindful of security risks and make sure your antivirus, antispyware, antimalware are all up-to-date. or use a "throwaway" computer for that. or a virtual machine/boot linux from a flash drive, if you know how (I don't).

Edit: typos

I think web archieve has a flash installer for linux, but try it at your own risk. I have no idea if WINE allows you to install windows' flash + windows version of browser + run both to see what happens... does that even make sense? or keep checking if ruffle made any progress with the AS3 support...

answering your question: I think they'll change to webGL for good and remove the flash option once all of the conversions (fashion show, ohmyloft, secret diary, etc.) are done. and once all rooms have backgrounds on all servers. and once the animated and the special items (such as the clone doll) are working as intended... this may take... a while, to say the least...

@willowskye: could you correct my above statement if I'm wrong?

EDIT: if you try to run the flash elements of OMD in ruffle, the warning screen should have a "more info" button (I'm on version 2021/02/03), and if you click, that, at the bottom, they mention another flash emulator named "lightspark". did anyone try that yet? (I can only test it tomorrow). it has a browser plugin version and runs on both windows and linux.

That's quite right, we can no longer do anything in that area.  And if you have VIP, you still collect the tokens that cannot be used at all.

unless you can get it to work with ruffle emulation or they convert it to unity webgl like they did to the lofts...
